Adopt a Tree Project
Students in Mrs. Agravat’s and Mrs. Persampieri’s fourth grade classes at Trinity School adopted one of the oak trees that surround their school garden. Through observations, they were able to experience and record the seasonal changes that occur in the life cycle of trees in the northeast. By taking measurements, they learned how to estimate the height of the tree and determine its approximate age by using dendrochronology (the study of tree rings). By comparing the oak tree with a pagoda tree students discovered the diversity of tree characteristics. Bark and leaf rubbings were included in their project. This was truly an interdisciplinary learning activity. Joyce Kent and Naomi Gams-Towers of Hudson Park Children's Greenhouse Programming Subcommittee ran the program. These fourth graders have been the cohort that have had HPCG programming for several years.
